Sonoran Desert Corn Traditions at Mission Garden

Program of activities hosted by Mission Garden in collaboration with Ajo Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

All activities are informal and educational in nature, in the spirit of fostering a learning community of cultural exchange

  • 8-10am: Planting Tohono O’odham 60-day corn in the O’odham Garden at Mission Garden. Led by Maegan Lopez of Mission Garden and Sterling Johnson of Ajo CSA

  •  10-11am: Traditional methods of harvesting, roasting and grinding corn to prepare ga’iwsa or chicos, traditional dishes featuring roasted corn. Led by Mission Garden and Ajo CSA

  • 11am-12pm: Ga’iwsa and chicos cooking demo and tastings. Led by Ajo CSA chef and Mission Garden staff and volunteers.

  •  9am-12pm: Collaborating Exhibitors

    •  Blue Corn Custom Designs (Diné blue corn products)
